Senior Project Day 3- May 10th

Today I woke up around 7 am, after getting only about 7.5 hours of sleep. At first I was kind of disappointed by this but then I realized that it’s probably because I’m not used to getting more than 6.5-7 during school, so getting 8-9 the past few days has left me much better rested and not needing more than the 7.5 last night. As soon as I got up I was feeling the aftermath of yesterday’s workout. My legs were pretty tight so I spent a good 20 minutes stretching and using the theragun before eating the same breakfast as usual. I eat this every day without fail because it tastes literally so good and has a perfect balance of carbs, protein, and fat to prepare me not only for my workout but for the whole day ahead.

Breakfast:

  • Coffee

  • Protein oats with peanut butter, banana, blueberries, and granola

I drank greens on the way to school and at 10:00, I started my warmup. Just a quick 15 minute one since I was doing a press day and there’s only so many upper body/shoulder stretches you can do. I had a solid 85 minute workout, destroying a bag of swedish fish throughout it to keep the carbs coming so that I wouldn’t get the urge to tap out early. Press days are always humbling for me, but I felt strong, well-rested, and well-fueled during the workout.

Exercises done today:

Overhead press

Pull-ups

Waiters walk

Dumbbell bench press

Smith machine overhead press

At the end of the workout, I had burned 248 active calories and 346 total calories. I did a quick 15-minute cooldown stretch before going to lunch.

Lunch:

-Turkey and cheese sandwich

-Fruit

-Vegetables

I then headed back to the gym, where I did a 10-minute core circuit consisting of six exercises and no rest in between. It was terrible and made me want to never do another ab workout. Since it wasn't long or super demanding, the calories burned here aren't even really worth taking into consideration. I then spent 45 minutes thoroughly stretching and rolling out.

For weight room today, I did another simple, no incline treadmill walk, broken up into different segments throughout the afternoon. I forgot to stop my watch so the times got messed up but I burned 118 active calories and 182 total calories.

Around 2:00 I ate again.

Snack:

-Banana with peanut butter and a protein shake. If you can’t tell, I have a slight addiction to peanut butter.

For dinner, I spent 45 minutes cooking, ending up with a rice bowl with chicken, avocado, sweet potato, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, avocado, roasted chickpeas, and a homemade balsamic vinaigrette.

After dinner, I watched 2 episodes of “Killer Sally”, a docu series about a bodybuilding couple. This totaled 2 hours. I then went to Naughty Nellie’s and got a massive ice cream.

Finally, I went grocery shopping to get more ingredients for my meals this week. This took 45 minutes and made me hangry, so when I got home I had 2 brownies. Overall, today was a success. I burned more than the past 2 days. I was over 3,000 calories and a gallon of water, had a killer workout, and felt really good. My legs are definitely starting to ache more as the day goes on so making sure I’m recovering well will be super important.

Today’s hours: 6.5

Total hours: 16.5

Senior Project Day 1- May 8th

This morning I woke up at 7:30, after 9 hours of sleep and ate breakfast.  Breakfast: Coffee Protein oats with peanut butter, banana, blueberries, and granola  I then spent an hour researching, investigating the benefits of intra workout carbs, since I planned to begin implementing them into my lifts. Although their effectiveness is debated and will obviously vary from person to person based on a variety of factors, there really isn’t any downside to consuming them. I got to the gym at 9:40 and spent 25 minutes stretching, warming up, and rolling out before beginning my push day. Snack: Overnight oats bar Around 20 minutes into the workout, I ate an overnight oats bar, which had a good balance of carbs and protein, to help power me through the 90 minute workout. Intra workout carbs are shown to help you sustain energy throughout and make you less likely to fail sets, as they replenish muscle glycogen so that you have energy constantly coming in helping you to get up the weight...

Week 2 Reflection

This week was a stellar week of lifts. I can definitely feel myself getting stronger. I was able to up either my weight or my reps for every one of the 4 days and hit a few PR's.  My volume rocketed up as well, which was awesome to see. I've been hitting my calorie goal every day and really prioritizing rest and recovery. These are paying off, and based on the results I'm seeing from prioritizing these, I will definitely make sure to continue paying close attention to them in all of my future workouts.  As I've mentioned before, one of my common personal issues is that I'm not good at taking rest days. Senior project has shown me how essential these are, and really reinforced the idea that rest days will actually help you build muscle, not cause you to lose it. I took 3 days off for the first time in over a year and my workouts in the week that followed were unreal and I saw serious progress. Last week, there were several days where I just did not want to lift what...

Senior Project Day 8- May 16th

Day 8:  This morning I woke up at 6:30 after a nice 9 hour sleep. I definitely could’ve gone back to bed and slept longer but usually when I sleep more than 9 hours I feel super lethargic and unmotivated so I decided to get up. I got to have my signature breakfast again which I loved after 3 days without it.  Breakfast: Coffee Protein oats with peanut butter, banana, blueberries, and granola I stretched and used the theragun for half an hour. I was pretty tight since I didn’t get the chance to stretch much over the weekend. Then I headed to school. I got there around 9:15 and did a 20 minute warmup before beginning my bench day. Around 10:15, about half an hour in, I ate for some more energy to keep me going.  Snack: -Overnight oats bar I felt really good throughout the whole workout, despite failing a new PR which sucked. However, I was able to hit more reps than last week, so my volume at the end of the workout was much higher.  Exercises done today: Bench...
